Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that everyone has had a nice Christmas holiday and enjoyed their break! This term our new topic is Maps, this will involve learning about the countries that make up the UK and also looking at the continents of the world. We also might try and plan some route planning and orienteering into this topic. Although our topic has now changed, we still have planned our trip to The Great Fire of London Museum in London
Please can I remind you to check your child’s contact book on a regular basis as important information will often go in there.
Spelling and Maths homework
Weekly spellings will be sent home every Monday to be tested for the following Monday. These will come home in their new spelling books. Maths homework will be to complete an activity on Matheletics, this will be an activity linked to our current class learning and will be sent home in their homework books.
I am aware that some of you are having difficulty accessing this from home, can I remind you that Mathletics can also be easily accessed through tablets/iPad apps. If you are having a problem accessing Mathletics please let us know so we can arrange for this too be supported in school.
This term in Maths we will be continuing to look at the place value of number, addition and subtraction and also introduce telling the time to the hour and half past the hour.
Don’t forget to use your Mathletics accounts at home!
Linking to our topic we are starting this term with inventing our own imaginary island and describing the features on it. We will also do some work on treasure maps.
For PE please ensure your child has a full fitting PE kit in school at all times. This is to include a plain PE t-shirt (white or house coloured), shorts (blue/black), and black or white trainers. Also, if your child wears tights to school, please could you provide a pair of socks in their kit bag too. Please could you also ensure that long hair is tied back on PE days and earrings are not to be worn on PE days. This term, Beech Class will have PE on a Monday and Wednesday and they will be learning Dance and Athletics.
Our RE topic will be linked to Easter for the most of the term.
Our Maps topic links to a Geography focus as we look at globes, maps and plans.
For the next 2 half terms we will be taking part in Forest schools with Colette on Thursdays. The class will be split into 2 groups. Group 1 will complete 6 consecutive weeks before swapping over with Group 2 next term. Please can you make sure that when it is your child’s turn that you send them in with a bag of old/spare clothes and put a pair of wellies on the class rack.
In Music, our specialist Music teacher, Mr Jaggard will continue to work with the children every Wednesday morning. In Art we will start using a range of materials to create and design our own pieces of art. We will also begin to look at a famous artist to create an in class art exhibition.
French will continue to be taught every Tuesday by Madame West.
This year, your child will have a ‘homework book’ with a grid of activities to complete at home, each activity has a number of points attached to it. If your child completes activities totalling to 200 points or more they will receive a Homework Certificate and a prize at Christmas.
Reading and Phonics is the biggest homework expectation in Beech Class. Your child MUST read at home everyday and please indicate that they have done this by commenting in the reading book everyday. For phonics, please revise with your child the phonics sounds and High Frequency words they were given in Reception. I have now enclosed in your child’s book bags the HFWs and Phonic sounds that your child is ‘expected’ to know by the end of Year 1 so please support the learning of the new sounds and words as the year continues by practising them at home everyday.
Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school everyday filled with water only and a warm coat as we go out no matter how cold. Please remember to supply a pair of wellies if you haven’t already done so. Please continue to read at home with your child everyday.
If you have an issues or concerns or if you would like to offer to be a volunteer reader in Beech Class, please come and see Miss Gower or Ms Clements.
Thank you for your support!
